You Are Everything: A Poem

This morning, while walking to pick up coffee (cappuccinos, flat whites, and lattes have become an enjoyable early morning weekend treat tradition for me and my wife), I was struck by a thought that quickly morphed into a sort of poem, and I’ve decided to share it with you here. The thought began earlier today while journaling after meditation. I wrote down, “I have nothing and I am everything. Every little thing fills me up completely, but just momentarily. And for that moment, that IS who I am, totally.” While walking to and from caffeine collection, the following words took shape:

I Am Everything
I have nothing
&
I am everything.

Every thing
fills me up.

I have nothing
&
I am everything.

I am this feeling
&
I am this cup.

I am This
for just a moment,
another moment something new.

I have nothing
&
I am everything.

In this moment,
I am you.

The Venn diagram above represents the variety of momentary “things” manifesting in the full spectrum of color while also unified by a certain emptiness (or fullness?) in the center. When I am speaking to you, I am you (a shade of color), when I am feeling a pain in my back or the pleasure of tasting ice cream, I am that feeling (another shade of color), and when I hold a cup in my hand and really look at it, I am that cup (yet another shade of color). The colors are all different visibly and the same invisibly. This notion may be helpful in that it emphasizes the fleeting nature of thoughts and feelings that may feel uncomfortable or even unbearable (they are you, but just in this moment), as well as the immensity of the little things that may seem insignificant (in this moment, they are you).

***On a final note, I’ve decided to add an option at the end of these blog posts for you to make a contribution. Please only do so if you feel moved to, and know that your donation goes directly toward helping me continue to provide affordable individual guidance as well as create new content, such as this blog, in the name of increased well-being and reduced psychological suffering. One particular project I’m currently working on is a book that encapsulates my psychological, philosophical, and spiritual perspective on getting to know oneself deeply and getting out of one’s own way. Your contribution would support these efforts and would be greatly appreciated (click the button below to donate).
Thank you for being here!
