What is the Self?

This morning, following a period of silent meditation, I moved to draw in my journal. While the meditation would externally appear “silent",” internally my mind was filled with ideas, and I wanted to use my journal a medium for visually representing this experience (as I often do). I’ve included the journal entry below in which the circle is the open pure space of Now and the arrows are the explosion of thoughts bursting from this space. As I looked at the simple drawing, it appeared like a sun with rays of light shooting in all directions, and I was inspired to write a sort of poem based on this vision. And here I am sharing it with you.

Running From Your Self

We are rays of sunlight

attempting to escape the Sun.

Obviously, we are the Sun…

and the rays.

I can only look back at the Sun

in glimpses,

but it is Me.

My thoughts,

and my self,

are like

rays of sunlight,

different

only in appearance

from the Sun itself.

***On a final note, I’ve added an option at the end of these blog posts for you to make a small contribution if you’d like. Please only do so if you feel moved to, and know that your donation goes directly toward helping me continue to provide affordable individual guidance as well as create new content, such as this blog, in the name of increased well-being and reduced psychological suffering. One particular project I’m currently working on is a book that encapsulates my psychological, philosophical, and spiritual perspective on getting to know oneself deeply and getting out of one’s own way. If you’re so inclined, your contribution would support these efforts and would be greatly appreciated (click the button below to donate). Thank you for being here!
