The Giant in the Mirror
I recently watched the Kanye West jeen-yuhs documentary and, whatever you may think of him, the combined footage provided a fascinating portrayal of an artist’s complex journey from relative obscurity to the apex of fame and, now, infamy. The clip included below displays one of my favorite moments in which Kanye’s mom, Donda, shares with him the following words of guidance:
The giant looks in the mirror
&
sees nothing.
“The giant looks in the mirror and sees nothing.” In the example of Kanye, it’s tempting to think that he began seeing and becoming consumed with his own gigantic reflection. But what do you see in the mirror? What do you imagine others see when they see what you see in the mirror? This, to me, is a powerful visual worth contemplating. You might even catch yourself in the mirror the next time you wash your hands or brush your teeth, and use this as a meditative opportunity. Who is it that you see?
When you look in the mirror
what or who
do you really see?
***On a final note, I’ve added an option at the end of these blog posts for you to make a small contribution if you’d like.
