A Letter to My Dad

I try to view everything as an opportunity for practice, for the discipline of being aware of just right now. This can turn any act, big or small, into something “sacred,” something that can put me in touch with my deeper self and dissolve the distractions that I ultimately know don’t really matter. Writing a card or letter is one such opportunity, and one that potentially allows for a direct communication between my deeper self and that of someone else - to potentially be genuinely seen and to show someone else that you truly see them. So, on this Father’s Day, I thought I might share a short letter to my dad:

Dad,
I’ve been thinking recently about the ways you’ve influenced me and shaped who I am and who I’m becoming. Two things stand out in particular: kindness and curiosity. Even when there has been anger and frustration, I sense you as a really gentle and kind person that just wants to make the people around him happy. You’ve taught me to let go of my own needs and to open up to the needs of others, and I’m still working on this! You’ve taught me from a young age to be curious about life, about nature, about different cultures, and I am so grateful for this - to see life as something wonderful to explore anew everyday.

I want you to know that you don’t need to do anything to make me happy other than to just be yourself. Recently, I’ve noticed a shift in you and in our relationship, like I feel you opening up to something (though I don’t know what that is exactly), and it’s inspiring to me. I wonder if you notice this, too? I may not have always been the easiest to get through to, but I’m continually attempting to open up as well, to reveal more of my genuine self, and I think we have the chance now to create a really special relationship on top of what we already have. I’m committed to doing this!

When Lindsay and I have a child, they will be lucky not only to have you in their life, but to experience you through me. I will show them the way of kindness and curiosity and I mainly hope to show them that they are good enough just as they are, and that the world is a miracle to explore.

Thank you for being you. I love you!
